A Georgia Forestry Commission wildland firefighter has earned the agency’s top award for leadership skills that bring significant protection to the state’s landowners. Will Dale of Lula, Georgia, has been named GFC’s 2025 Wildland Firefighter of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in all aspects of wildfire training and response in Georgia and on assignments nationwide.

“Will has brought remarkable energy and insight to our wildland firefighting capabilities in north Georgia and wherever he serves,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Director Johnny Sabo. “His focus on training, delivery, and commitment have delivered significant results for his Habersham County Unit and our agency as a whole.”

The award recognizes Dale’s exceptional performance as a certified regional crew boss and lead worker. He responded to numerous wildfires and completed 16 prescribed burns. In addition, on special assignment, he led a hand crew whose actions protected critical infrastructure and roadways following a mudslide in Utah.

Dale has been with the Georgia Forestry Commission for eight years. He previously served in law enforcement, structural firefighting, and hazardous materials response. He is a White County native who lives with his wife and children on the family cattle farm where he grew up.
