Welcome to "A Tree's Dream"

Teach your students about ways we are conserving Earth’s natural resources and protecting the environment through the “A Tree’s Dream” video and accompanying lessons.  Follow the dream of Tim the tree as he fulfills his dream of becoming part of a family’s home.

About The Video

“A Tree’s Dream” highlights the life cycle of a tree from seedling, to products created through sustainable harvesting, to replanting. Students learn about the economic, environmental and social benefits of sustainable forest management. The story is told through the life of Timmy The Tree during his journey of making his dream come true…becoming a house.

Lesson Plans for Grades 3-5 & 6-8

Lessons correlated to the Next Generation Science Standards

Grades

3-5

Tree Growth & Products

In this lesson, students will learn about the life cycle of a tree, and the products that trees provide us with every day.

Grades

6-8

Tree Growth & Products

In this lesson, students will learn about a tree’s anatomy and how each part helps it grow and function. They will explore products that trees offer us and map how they are manufactured. Finally, they will calculate the value of environmental and economic benefits that trees provide.

Grades

3-5

Caring For Our Trees Today & For The Future

In this class, students will identify ways that people use forests; and, how professionals sustainably manage forests resources.

Grades

6-8

Caring For Our Trees Today & For The Future

In this class, students will identify ways that people use forests; and, how professionals sustainably manage forests resources.

Grades

3-5

Environmental Services

Students will learn about the many environmental benefits that trees and forests provide such as wildlife habitat, clean air and water, and soil protection. Students will make observations about how trees and plants filter and clean water as well as protect and stabilize soil. Then they will complete an erosion assessment of their school and develop an action plan to mitigate identified erosion problems.

Grades

6-8

Environmental Services

Students will make observations on a tree’s ability to filter and clean water as well as protect and stabilize soil. They will complete an erosion assessment of their school and create action items to improve it. Finally students will develop a land management plan to improve erosion and reduce stormwater runoff at their school using i-Tree Design software.

3-5

Grades

Engineering Design Using Wood Products

In this lesson, students design and build a structure using wood materials to stimulate their creativity and critical thinking skills.

6-8

Grades

Engineering Design Using Wood Products

In this lesson, students work in teams to design and build a structure using wood materials then test their structure’s strength. Students then evaluate test data to redesign, build, and test new structures.
