The Cooperative Forestry unit of the USDA Forest Service works closely with partners to enhance and maintain forests across watersheds and ecosystems, both on private and public land, for the benefits they provide to the American people. Cooperative Forestry delivers its work through states, local governments, other federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and other partners leveraging additional resources and fueling innovation.

The Inflation Reduction Act Forest Landowner Support programming provides financial assistance grants for projects that support underserved and small-acreage forest landowner participation in emerging private markets for climate mitigation and forest resilience.

The Forest Stewardship Program seeks to conserve, protect and enhance private forest landscapes by connecting individual and family woodland owners with the information, technical assistance, and professional planning to achieve their stewardship goals.
The Forest Legacy Program provides grants to state agencies to permanently conserve important forest lands that support strong markets for forest products, protect air and water quality, provide recreational opportunities, and sustain important fish and wildlife habitat.
The Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program provide financial assistance grants to local governments, Indian tribes, and qualified nonprofit organizations (including land trusts) to establish community forests that provide defined public benefits.
The Urban and Community Forestry Program supports the health of all our nation’s forests by creating jobs, contributing to vibrant regional wood economies, enhancing community resilience, and preserving the unique sense of place in cities and towns of all sizes.
Ecosystem Service and Markets seeks to harness the comprehensive suite of benefits that people receive and value from nature, including but not limited to wood products, clean air, water filtration, flood control, recreational experiences, carbon sequestration, renewable energy, pollination, and cultural heritage.
Wood Innovations provides technical assistance and grant funding to non-federal parties to foster the introduction and expansion of wood uses in the economy. Two primary areas of focus in recent years have been wood energy and the use of advanced wood products, such as cross laminated timber, in building construction.
Forest Taxation and Estate Planning provides nationwide technical assistance to private forest landowners, state forestry agencies, universities, and forestry associations on issues relating to tax and estate planning for the management and stewardship of private forest lands.
