January is synonymous with pledges to “get moving” and “get organized.” As those goals apply to your trees, here’s a reminder about the diverse range of services GFC offers to landowners big and small.

Forest Fire Protection and Prevention

One of GFC’s primary focuses is preventing and managing forest fires. These services include wildfire detection and suppression, as well as strategies to mitigate risks. While permits for hand-piled debris are no longer required, we provide burn permits for machine-piled and acreage burns. Fee-based services, such as firebreak plowing and prescribed burning assistance, are also available. Additionally, GFC offers wildfire mitigation advice, training in wildland firefighting, and guidance for creating Firewise communities. During emergencies, we support disaster management and help carry out after-event measures.

Forest Management

For landowners and communities, GFC provides tailored advice on reforestation, timber stand improvement, and sustainable harvesting. Our expertise extends to Forestry Best Management Practices (BMP), pest detection, and forest stewardship planning. We also assist with federal conservation programs, ensuring forests are managed responsibly and sustainably. To further support landowners, we offer directories of forestry service providers, timber buyers, and arborists.

Reforestation

Reforestation is a key area of focus for GFC. We sell pine and hardwood seedlings at GaSeedlings.org. GFC also conducts tree breeding, seed production, and testing. Our research in biomass reforestation and silviculture supports the sustainable growth of Georgia’s forests.

Forest Services, Utilization, and Marketing

The GFC actively supports the economic and environmental utilization of forest resources. We maintain directories of wood-using industries and conduct economic impact analyses. Our work also includes promoting biomass energy and emerging forest markets, analyzing forest resources, and assisting in trade shows. Through programs like the Carbon Sequestration Registry, we support the role of forests in combating climate change.

Urban and Community Forestry

The GFC enhances urban spaces through our Urban and Community Forestry Program. This includes consultations with arborists, grants such as the “Making the Shade” program, and support for Tree City/Tree Campus USA initiatives. Many tree plantings and tree giveaways happen throughout the year. Our tools for landowner and community forest management ensure that urban green spaces are resilient and well-maintained.

Education

The Georgia Forestry Commission has offices throughout the state, where knowledgeable staff are equipped to help customers understand the role of forestry in their lives. Through meetings, demonstrations, and other special events, Georgians can get a personal take on the valuable services of the GFC. A wide variety of resource materials, including videos and podcasts, are available at GaTrees.org.

Through these services, GFC plays a vital role in protecting Georgia’s forests, promoting sustainable practices, and supporting communities in our stewardship of forest resources. We’re here for your tree needs year ‘round! For more information, visit GaTrees.org.
